10 EVENTS IN RIGA IN MAY 2022. A useful shortlist.
With a few exceptions, it has been two years without our CAPITAL R monthly event shortlists. The restrictions of the pandemic are finally lifted, covid is slowly stepping back for now (hopefully - for good), and we are immensely happy to see Riga being vibrant again, with streets at their fullest with people and the revenance of off-the-screen culture life; also May again reminds us about the day of our Restoration of Latvian Independence after the Soviet yoke - a very relevant thing to celebrate especially with what's happening now in Ukraine. As if there was no pause since March 2020, here's our next shortlist of 10 great events in Riga this May everyone can visit or take part in! Hooray!
TROUBLED MINDS

"Troubled minds" is a Latvian made all original and surprisingly contemporary "dark, psychedelic dramedy that revolves around two brothers, a pair of
contemporary artists, who are preparing for their biggest exhibition
yet, which they want to turn into an “art terror act”, and who are
struggling to cope with their personal ambitions, bipolar disorder and
psychedelic experiences, as well as their ability to accept each other’s
artistic ego." In movie theaters most likely only in May.
"Riga Photography Biennial (RPB) is an international contemporary art event, focusing on the analysis of visual culture and artistic representation. The term ‘photography’ in the title of the biennial is used as an all-embracing concept encompassing a mixed range of artistic image-making practices that have continued to transform the lexicon of contemporary art in the 21 st century.
The RPB's programme in 2022 explores the phenomenon of isolation from different
angles. Alongside the main theme, the focus is also on the coding of the
contemporary image. In an era in which different virtual technologies
are developing, photography as an artistic medium has entered a new
phase, and the understanding of photography – the image – has changed.
We need to re-learn how to read the information contained in an image."
"Now entering their sixth decade, the legendary Los Angeles-based brothers Ron and Russell Mael remain as innovative, individualistic, and irresistible as ever before. Recently, a landmark new documentary from director Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Baby Driver) was also released celebrating the heritage of the Sparks Brothers. Hailed by Rolling Stone as “one of the most entertaining music documentaries in years,” the feature-length film takes audiences on a musical odyssey through five weird and wonderful decades with Sparks, joined by such celebrity fans as Flea, Björk, Beck, “Weird Al” Yankovic, Neil Gaiman, and more all celebrating the inspiring legacy of Sparks."

the Year", Pitchfork ranked 17th among the top 50 albums of 2020, and

“Murphy’s Law” ranked 32nd among the top 50 songs of 2020 and the BBC
Culture album included among “The best 2020 albums and songs of the year
”." Róisín is most def one of the longest awaited artists in Riga since her time in another influential band Moloko.
One of the most popular contemporary bands in Latvia, "Jungle was founded in 2013 by producer duo and childhood friends Tom Mcfarland and Josh Lloyd-watson from London. A year later the release of their eponymous debut album followed, and the band broke through worldwide almost immediately with smashing hits such as 'the heat' and 'busy earning'. Jungle makes sultry electronic neo-soul, strongly inspired by disco and funk from the 70s. In 2018, Jungle released their second album 'forever': again an album that relies heavily on a vintage sound, without sounding old-fashioned for a moment. In 2021, the band released their third studio album 'loving in stereo'" Spotify Web
"Aurora
is a techno record label liberated of musical discrimination. Through
its releases and parties, Aurora. explores country- and city-specific
techno variations and makes bridges between these different creative
enclaves, forming bonds between artists and listeners and giving a voice
to the more unknown and unusual scenes out there. On the occasion of the release "Aurora Introduces Latvia", Aurora has been called to represent its risk taking musical vision for a 7 hours non-stop dance event."
"With a slogan of “Together!”, this year’s Rimi Riga Marathon will be dedicated to Ukraine. On May 15th, participants from around the world will be united in a run to support Ukraine. The significant public sporting event, which will attract the highest number of runners since the pandemic, will involve more than ten thousand participants from Latvia, the Baltics and elsewhere. In solidarity with Ukraine, beloved musicians and choirs from Latvia and Ukraine will perform on the 11 November Embankment and at the Freedom Monument, while the income from the 6 km race, which will be themed this year with Ukrainian colours, will be donated to support Ukraine.
We have made sure that the participation in the 6 km distance is free of charge for all Ukrainian runners, while the participation of the Ukrainian children in the event, regardless of the chosen distance, will be completely free." Facebook
The world famous Dutch lautist and a kindred soul of the director Jim Jarmush will be performing one of his many (almost annually) concerts in Riga. Yet this dark, repetitive, and emotional mediation is still a must and is beloved by many other musicians in Latvia. Spotify Web
"Eagles
of Death Metal is an American rock band from Palm Desert, California,
formed in 1998. Founded by Jesse Hughes and Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age), the band also
includes a wide range of other musicians who perform both on the band's
studio albums and at live shows." Their sound derives a lot from Josh Hoome's projects, however the lyrics and delivery is rather comical and entertaining than serious and heavy! Spotify
