10 EVENTS IN RIGA IN OCTOBER 2021. A useful shortlist.
Don't be fooled by the weather getting chillier and darker in Riga - the Sun still shines in October, the leaves are colourful and the air is fresh and crispy. So are the events this month - vibrant, crunchy and full of that special freshness and light before the darkness of winter approaches. Goodbye, all my money!
P.S. This month is the first in a while when we don't use colour codes for events regarding the epidemiological situation as the government has issued a bill for all indoor places to be open only for the certificated from 11 October. It means only vaccinated people or who have had covid in the past 6 months can enter venues (certificate+ID must be shown).
BRĪVIBA

As a reflection toward the growing incompetence and censorship in Latvian contemporary art world, a new gallery called "Freedom" and located on the central Freedom street has been opened. The location will run at this venue until the end of the year, yet it will still be an interesting playground for thoughts about the contemporary art world and forms, artists and boarders. The first show will be by the young artist Brenda Jansone, and it will be accompanied by an experimental tv series "Brick Bar".
SELF-REFLECTION
Tintoretto, Omar Galliani, Lorenzo Puglisi
"Celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Art Museum RIGA BOURSE, in collaboration with the world-famous Uffizi Gallery, the Italian art exhibition “Self-Reflection. Tintoretto, Omar Galliani, Lorenzo Puglisi” will be on view. The centre of the exposition is the “Portrait of a Man” by the great Venetian Renaissance artist Tintoretto, which is to be seen in Riga for the first time ever, while contemporary artists Omar Galliani and Lorenzo Puglisi will introduce the audience to their large-scale compositions created especially for this exhibition.

The most important adventurous music festival in the Baltics probably returns for the 19th year with a fresh selection of everything from "from electro-acoustic music, free improvisation, contemporary composition and noise to interesting shifts in dance music, hip-hop and rock or metal".

Radical Culture in Eastern Europe in the 1960s and 1970s

How much: free admittance In this workshop, contributors will explore the ways in which Counter-Cultural affinities and New Left politics – defined broadly – were channeled by artists, theatre, film-makers, writers, musicians and others in Eastern Europe in the 1960s and 1970s. "Twin Tribes are a darkwave post-punk band from Brownsville, Texas. Twin Tribes has been described as “chilly romanticism with rare clarity” by I:Die:You Die, and “dark, dramatic, atmospheric, hypnotic, and, while 80’s nostalgic, starkly unique” by Oscura Undead. They are post-punk at heart, weaving dark melodic basslines, synthezisers, with lyrics about the undead and parallel universes." KASETES, instead, are a Latvian band playing well around with a retro-wave synthesizer sound and are one of the hottest indie electronic music bands around.

"The Riga International Film Festival was established in 2014, and has quickly become one of Latvia’s premier cultural events. It is a celebration of cinema that introduces the international film industry to the current body of work coming out of the Baltic Sea region and the Nordic countries, and in turn, introduces local audiences to the latest happenings in world cinema. The festival advances public interest in current events taking place in the contemporary cinema landscape, and encourages dialogue between viewers and filmmakers."

There are few important events out of Riga in October as well:
Efterklang - one of the most loved Danish bands of all times in Latvia are coming to Cēsis on 24 October;
Zemlika - another significant festival of adventurous music will again take place in a small town close to Liepāja, Durbe, from 22 - 23 October.
