EVENTS IN JANUARY 2019. A useful shortlist.
Is there life after NYE? Or, more precisely - is there any money left to even considering going anywhere? For sure, you don't need to be broke like a millennial, you can simply enjoy giving presents, alcohol or travels too much.
Despite the presumable, January this year is full with events, and again majority belong to music - the most international language of all. Sadly, this year comes with sorrowful news to many - the very first performance in Latvia by a comedian Bill Burr and a first Drink&Draw session of 2019 are... sold out totally. Yet there are many other cool events to choose from. What to do in Rīga? Here is the first and a next event shortlist from CAPITAL R this year.
POPPER PUBLISHING KIOSK

"Popper Publishing is an artist collective from Riga founded in 2012. Since then it has been active in many different fields such as exhibition, event curating, zine and book publishing, focusing on contemporary art, drawing, illustration, graffiti and photography. Popper Publishing holds multiple national awards and nominations", and now is opening door to their own limited sales! More than a dozen magazines and artist books are on purchase!

One of the last, although not the oldest alternative music resorts in Old Town present their first concert by the present outsiders of independent eclecticism in Latvia's music scene - MANTA. Quirky, ironic, melancholic and wavy sadcore, their distinct sound "stems from the use of vocal polyphony and an original spectrum of instruments in different combinations – Cremona bass or synth bass, piano, live drums and original samples, Vermona 2 organ, “Электроника” synthesizer, Korg Electronic keyboard, and a special guest – Casio VL1."

EPIPHANY DAY CONCERT

This, for sure, might be the very first event CAPITAL R recommends to visiting in a church. Yet concert series in Riga Dome Cathedral, especially after the reconstruction of the beautiful, world famous organ, are anyways a must. This Sunday - a gorgeous combination of Riga Cathedral parish choir, Dace Melvere as choir master, Jolanta Barinska by organ, Emīls Dārziņš Music School string quartet, Annija Purmale as artistic director, with vocal group “EPIC SOUND” and Toms Kazimirisaņecs as conductor and artistic director. The line-up - W. A. Mozart, J. Rutter, R. Dubra. Ē. Ešenvalds etc!

VERY COOL PEOPLE

One of the most groovy bands in Latvia are playing their next gig in ALA folk club at 21:00. "Very Cool People is a jazz-funk band originated in Riga. With a backbone in jazz and funk, incorporating influences from rock and hip-hop, Very Cool People is creating modern, complicated and listenable music for a wide audience. The band is using contemporary tools and trying to put jazz back to dancefloor and make it more accessible to ordinary, present listeners."

The world famous Dutch lautist and a kindred soul of the director Jim Jarmush will be performing his 3rd (or 4th) time in the past years in Riga. Yet this dark, repetitive, and emotional mediation is still - a must.

"Paul Kalkbrenner is a German live act, producer of electronic music, and actor from Berlin. Because he breaks down his tracks into elements that are reassembled onstage, Kalkbrenner is considered a live act, as opposed to a DJ."

The "Aristīds" group of producers release their first dance night from their Klik Klak series with a Mexican born, Berlin based DJ and producer Lokier! "She started DJing when 21 years old at illegal raves in Mexico City. Her sound is reaching dark, industrial, acid and electro territories. Lokier production has been released on some of the finest labels: Pinkman, Squirrels On Film, Aufnahme & Wiedergabe."

The masters of ironic, dark macabre cabaret are in Rīga again and, for sure, will warm up everybody on the intended January. Songs about the dark side of the man that turns out more absurd and jolly than we think.

Besides this event, ONE ONE are opening their ALL NICER series on January for total all-nighters, and there are waay to many events to attend. Yet we choose this one as a starter - browse for more! "Judzhen has become one of the most wanted house masters in Riga. Even though he's trained as an accordionist, Judzhen is fixed to rhythm and percussion – from his sets to his production he's full of energy and flow, be it disco influenced or jazz influenced house – you'll always find yourself bouncing shoulders back and fourth to a irresistible groove. Resident at One One Club Riga."

Similarly to ONE ONE, the fast emerging suburb industrial club Teritorija is also opening a load of house music series this January. For a teaser we chose another local DJ - Oaksmith. "Behind the decks, Oaksmith selects tracks that blend mantric rhythms, organic sounds and vocals that speak to the soul. DJ sets are filled with playful and uplifting tunes, played keeping the downtempo vibe. He started his journey in 2010 and mainly played in the old town’s clubs in Riga, experimenting with various genres and styles. In 2016 he went to the Norway alps where he met few local DJ artists and under their influence developed his passion for the Ethno-Electronica, Slow-Disco, World Class Music."
