September is the best month in Riga for a visit. Arguably, yet the amount and quality of events in town is beyond imagination. Plus, the city is again and again full with young and old folks back from vacations or summer breaks. The city is bubbly, the weather is optimally warm and the autumn landscapes - picturesque. Stuff's happening this month, and here are 10 impressive things to prove it!

This exhibition, run by one of the most prominent new media art centrs in Europe, RIXC, is an intent to play at the "splinters" of our contemporary condition, affected moreover by an ongoing war, post pandemics, media ubiquity and social division. It features artworks by international artists who explore transformative potential of art and extended reality, and ground their "realism" position in the perspective of "naturecultures" – in the spirit of Guattari's ecosophy, Latour's "terrestrial coexistence", and Haraway's "arts of living on a damaged planet"…
HOMO NOVUS

Homo Novus is an incredibly important stage art festival in Europe and beyond, taking place for 27th year! This time after 2 very confusing years of covid, we "will once again fit comfortably back into theatres and remain in the streets, the villages and beyond. This year’s program invites familiar faces, commissioned works closer to home and continues the festival’s commitment to present works from artists who practices are not represented locally.
At the core of this year’s festival is a collaboration and giving space to other artists – on their own terms. The Shakedown a collaboration with Rosendal Theater, Trondheim, invites 5 Latvian and 5 Norwegian teens to curate the final weekend of the festival; Schwankhalle Bremen travels to Riga (we are sister cities after all) presenting eight 1-on-1 works as a first in a series of exchanges; and lastly we generate a cultural connections between ANTI festival in Kuopio, Finland – bonded together in two new commissions as we continue our mission to generate connections between out cities."

"There will be an "Ancient Settlement", where you can see and buy reconstructions and replicas of archeological excavations, and there will also be the best masters from the Latvian Folk Applied Art Fair. Among the more than 200 participants almost 20 contemporary potters, 30 jewelers and jewelers, more than 70 craftsmen will offer traditional and contemporary textiles, felt and silk products, as well as gorgeous knits and crochet. There will be wood and toy masters, weavers, blacksmiths and glaziers." N.B. Since the parking space is scarse, we suggest arriving by public transport or two-wheel trasportation.

The
White Night (Nuit Blanche) tradition was started in 2002 in Paris and
it spread like a positive pandemic to Brussels, Rome and Madrid, with
Riga as one of the early adopters, too. Sadly it seems the programme
only offers Latvian translation for now. :(
